The Uvumbuzi Hub is a platform for youth as agents for sustainable development through entrepreneurship, sustainable innovations, leadership, networking and mentorship. The Hub seeks to encourage sustainable innovations and create long lasting partnerships that would spearhead innovation and investment for sustainable development. Youth participating in the hub get support in:

Actualizing sustainable innovations

We help innovators establish the impact of their innovations on the well-being of people by resolving or addressing a specific problem related to extractives and energy sectors. Importantly, innovators are helped to view their innovations as tools to be used in sustainably improving the well-being of people in their community. The goal of this support is to help innovators to appreciate addressing social or technical problems as prerequisites for their innovations. This includes problem identification and concept development.

Mentorship

Our mentorship programme targets innovations that are strong in addressing a technical and social problem in the energy and extractives sector in Africa. We build a mentoring relationship with innovators in which one or more mentors provide on-going guidance in a formal structure. Our mentorship program provides innovation support by linking innovators with relevant industry experts in their line of innovation. Innovators also have access to a panel review from a network of mentors from different backgrounds to enable them refine their innovations to make business sense and be able to attract the necessary financial support.

The mentorship programme is also a hybrid model that incorporates aspects of product development and business model refinement. As innovators are mentored, we provide a platform for practical troubleshooting of their innovations through linkages with institutions that have the necessary facilities and interest in different innovations. The business model refinement process enables innovators to look at their innovations as products or tools with a business value. This process enables them to appreciate the cost of developing their innovations, the market value of such an innovation and the need to have an elaborate business plan.

Market entry

Our support for innovators is geared towards helping their innovations find space in the market. This is achieved by establishing opportunities and risks of the product. Innovators are helped to know how to diversify or broaden their risk. This includes identifying potential markets or industries that will benefit from the innovation and which will have the best payoff for the innovation. Innovators are supported to understand the dynamic nature of markets from social to commercial aspects and how to build strong networks with relevant markets.

Graduation into the Extractives Incubation Programme upon Completion of the Accelerator Programme

The graduation programme enables the best innovations with strong market entry potential to get support through the accelerator programme. The accelerator programme helps innovators to determine their fundraising strategy and how to engage with different investors. Innovators are linked to potential investors who are willing to invest in the innovation. Importantly, innovators are supported to learn how to develop their marketing skills and communication. At the heart of the program is providing support on building a financial model for innovators’ business growth and investment as well as management skills.
