Challenges that Women, Children and Youth Face in Pre Post and Actively Mining Areas

As is the case of most mineral resource rich countries in the world, mineral resource management proves to be of importance in the governance structure of the country. Its importance cannot be overemphasized; governments in mineral resource rich countries are voted into office by citizens because of promises of optimizing the utilization of the resources in a sustainable and beneficial manner, only to be voted out of office after failing to do so.

In as much as mineral development can create new communities and bring wealth to those that are already in existence, it is important to note that resource extraction can cause considerable disruption too.

Take for instance, with the coming of new mining projects in remote areas;jobs, business activities, better roads, schools, and health clinics are expected and at times delivered, however most times, benefits are not evenly shared;poor recompense for the loss of existing livelihoods and the damage to their environment and culture is what communities have to show for mining activities. Consequently, if communities feel they are being unfairly treated or inadequately compensated, mining can equally lead to social tension and sometimes to violent conflict.
